The Huntsville Public Library Friends’ Art Contest will be held during Summer 2019. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” The contest is open for all five through 18 year olds and fifteen winners will be selected. Correctly filled out submission forms are required to be eligible as is artwork that adheres to the submission guidelines. The deadline to submit your artwork is Monday, August 12. Winners will be announced in September.

Do you have children ages 2 or under? If so, then Mother Goose Lapsit is a storytime designed for you! Enjoy a half-hour of developmentally appropriate activities featuring stories, songs, and rhymes Mondays at 10:30 a.m. This program introduces little ones to the story time experience and is perfect for developing language and vocabulary. Sign-up is not required.

Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! It’s an exercise program offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older.

The Huntsville Public Library is pleased to host the Huntsville Audubon Society as they lead two exciting all-ages programs in the library over the summer. At 1:30 p.m.on Tuesday, July 16, and is called “Bird Migration: How, Why, and Where.” Registration for these programs is not required. Join us in the Staggs Community room for this free event.

Story Time is a fun early literacy program for kids 5 and under at the Huntsville Public Library. Join us for interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts three times a week in the Staggs Community Room. The early literacy practices featured each week help build the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. Story Time offers caregivers and parents an opportunity to experience early literacy practices in action, discover great books and resources for home use, and socialize with other parents after Story Time. There is something new each week! Sign-up is not required. Story Time is held on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday mornings.

The Huntsville Public Library is pleased to announce an opportunity for genealogy enthusiasts and newcomers alike to meet with experienced and qualified genealogical researchers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One-hour sessions will be offered weekly on Thursdays. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendance will be limited to no more than four researchers. The small group will allow each participant to receive individual attention. Sign-up is not required. This program is for adults 17 and older.

When researching your family tree, using online databases is not only convenient but also sometimes necessary. Come to the Huntsville Public Library from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 18 to learn more about Family Search, Ancestry.com and the interface between them. Walker County Genealogical Society member Emmy Bushman will share her expertise that will facilitate your research. The sessions are sponsored by the Walker County Genealogical Society. Appreciate the beauty of nature at “All About Butterflies” with the Houston Museum of Natural Science presentation at the Huntsville Public Library. Learn about metamorphosis and more in this interactive program with caterpillars and butterflies. The HMNS Butterfly Show has been rescheduled for Friday, July 19 in the Staggs Community Room. Multiple 30 minute shows will be held during the afternoon. This program is best suited for ages 2 and up. This is a registration-only event.

If your family tree is missing some branches, then sign up for “Exploring Ancestry.com”, a workshop devoted to teaching the basics of this online family history resource. The workshop will be held on the first Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Develop the skill sets needed for online genealogical research. Learn how to navigate the different learning centers and databases. Discover family tree members using Ancestry.com tools such as vital, census, military, and immigration records. The site is free to library patrons when used on the library’s computers. Limit 4 per session.
