    The Huntsville Public Library is pleased to announce an opportunity for genealogy enthusiasts and newcomers alike to meet with experienced and qualified genealogical researchers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One-hour sessions will be offered weekly on Thursdays in September. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendance will be limited to no more than four researchers. The small group will allow each participant to receive individual attention. This program is for adults 17 and older.

    Where do you fit into the puzzle? Bring your puzzle pieces to the Huntsville Public Library and let us help you put it together from 3 pm to 5 pm Thursdays beginning September 20, 2018. Johnnie Jo Dickenson will guide participants in the research of their family history using investigative tools such as online databases and resources and the library’s extensive genealogy collection. The two-hour sessions will be held every week through October 25, 2018 in the Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickenson Genealogy Room.

  3. Shakespeare Theater for Teens - Audition

    Following the success of the summer theater bootcamp program, the Huntsville Public Library is pleased to offer another semester of “Shakespeare Theater for Teens” in conjunction with the Huntsville Independent School District. Interested participants between the ages of 12 and 17 are invited to audition for the upcoming theatrical production at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, September 20. Following the auditions, theater rehearsals will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, September 27, October 4, October 18, October 25, November 1, November 15, and November 29. The program will be led by HISD teacher Ian McPhail. Performance dates are to be announced at a later time. Registration is required.

    Get in on the fun! Play Texas 42 at the Huntsville Public Library. Texas 42 is a dominoes game similar in style to bridge and spades. It is held from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays at the Library. Studies show playing dominoes can be beneficial for the mind as attention to detail and strategy are essential to play. So, come to the Library each week and strategize your winning moves.     The Huntsville Public Library will be hosting a FREE Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays starting September 24, 2018 in the Community Room. The six-week program will be taught by Ce Cowart Schlicher and Katharine Tuck with the Texas A & M Center for Population Health & Aging. Participants will learn: techniques to deal with problems such as depression, fatigue, isolation and poor sleep; exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; proper nutrition and communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals. Class size is limited and you must be over 18 to attend.

A series of 3 classes from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesdays begins September 11th in the Computer Lab. These classes will feature activities on typing and how to make corrections, formatting text, working with pictures and graphics, and using tables and outline with bullets.   16. Forum on Opioid Epidemic

    The Huntsville Public Library will present a public forum to discuss the opioid epidemic and its effects on Huntsville and Walker County from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 27. A panel of professionals in the fields of public health care, drug abuse treatment and rehabilitation, counseling services, and law enforcement will address their concerns regarding the epidemic.     Dave Dersham, folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist will perform his own music Friday, September 28 at noon in the Huntsville Public Library’s Staggs Community Room. Dersham, a longtime resident of Northampton, Massachusetts, describes himself as an Americana artist and a performing songwriter. He regularly tours the “subterranean folk pockets” of the Northeast, southern California, and Texas.

    The Huntsville Public Library will host free GED classes taught by Lone Star College staff (dates to be announced). Students are required to attend Orientation from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 29 to enroll. Students 19 years and older should bring valid government-issued photo ID. Students 18 years of age and younger, in addition to the ID, need a self-consent form, a parental consent form, and a withdrawal form from their previous institution. Preregistration is necessary.     Don’t be intimidated by the SAT! The SAT (one of the two standardized achievement tests colleges use for admission purposes) is quickly approaching. The Huntsville Public Library, in partnership with Sam Houston State University, is here to help you prepare for the math portion of the SAT. Professor Rebecca Garcia from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will be teaching four sessions of SAT Math Prep from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, September 29, October 13, October 20, and October 27 at the Huntsville Public Library. Interested participants must register at myhuntsvillelibrary.com and need to bring pencils and a calculator. This free program is best suited for 7th-12th grade students.
